Tonight,  The Pilot Light premiered the movie Once Upon a Time in Knoxville; a movie about Rollo’s Ridge in South Knoxville produced by Fugue State Films.   Rollo is a local icon.  Fifteen years ago, many thought he was insane.  Now, he is a visionary.

Wiki Bee Leaks

Banned in Germany, France, Italy, and Slovenia for its toxic effects, Clothianidin is the word on beekeepers' and gardeners' lips in recent days.  In what is being coined as the Wiki Bee Leaks, this news has gone viral since the posting of Holy Smoking Bee Gun, Batman (December 10, 2010) by Tom Philpott on Grist.

The Turning Wheel

"call me crazy, but it smells a lot like Spring outside this morning."



That's my Facebook update from the morning of January 18th.  Call me crazy?  But why?  Well, if you haven't noticed, for the most part, it is still unmistakeably winter out there though I'm calling for Spring.  Temps have been hanging at right around freezing for weeks, and we've had nights in the teens...

Biochar

I'm reading a great book called 'The Biochar Solution' by fellow Tennessean - Albert Bates. I'm enjoying his explanation of how biochar was 'invented'  by the folks in the amazon basin, and also the easy to follow descriptions of how it works and how to make it. 

I went to the International Biochar Convention last year but got lost in all the soil science debates / biofuel scaling issues. I like that this book focuses on low-tech ways to make biochar work on the small scale for…
