The Agrarian Urbanite

There is a link on the front page of the Knoxville Permaculture Guild, but I also wanted to post a link to The Agrarian Urbanite online. I publish at the beginning of each month, and will keep online right now until I begin selling enough subscriptions to offset the printing and mailing...then no more "free" online.

Remember to read because it's good for you.

More Detailed Composting Instruction

I have taken the composting handout and expanded it.

You need to compost. It is a cheap and free way to amend & enrich soil. It is easy to do, saves money and is environmentally sound. Turn your scraps into soil and have the healthiest garden on the block.

Composting and Sheet Mulching Handouts

Some folks have expressed an interest in these handouts. The documents are taken from power point slides of a four hour vegetable class I developed as an AmeriCorps volunteer.

Feel free to copy and educate as needed. I ask, only, that you keep my name at the bottom and give me credit for writing and compiling the information. A lot of work went into these (and the entire presentation). You will need to open them with Power Point.… Continue

Mardi Gras Should be the New, New Year

Oh come on, let's face it, very few people keep their New Year's resolutions. By the time January 20th rolls around, many people have abandoned the ridiculous attempts to keep in line with those resolutions. Making New Year right in the dead center of the Dark Days needs rethinking.

Traditionally, the winter was a time for rest. When we lived in a more tribal time in tune with Earth, the dark cold winter days and nights sent us indoors. The ground and animals rested. We rested until the light o… Continue

Garden Jitters

It's that time of year when gardeners begin to feel edgy. The long winter nights have finally turned as the days are noticeably longer. We begin to feel that the time is near to begin in the garden. Knowing that timing for planting is an essential key, the anxiety starts to build. For beginning gardeners, timing can seem like a daunting task. For experienced gardeners, timing can seem like a daunting task.

Hopefully the seeds have been ordered, and if they haven't already arrived, are soon to b… Continue

Seed saving, landscape design (prefer edibles and natives), vegetable garden design, vegetable gardening, herb gardening, greenhouse experience, composting, teaching, writing, advocacy, more as I think of it...
What neighborhood do you live in?
Parkridge (east Knoxville) with husband, Chad, and son, Blue
About me:
I garden. I read. I study. I write. I run. I ride my bike. I follow Earth.

I am an urban gardener focusing on edibles. I am a mother to one. I'm proud to say that I've been married to loving husband, Chad, for ten years. I write a column for the Parkridge Press and The Hellbender. I have a dog and two wild cats.

I am passionate about our great Mother earth and getting folks to think outside the box.

Hi Tracie,

Thanks for the comments on our new coop. Yes, I've been working on them for about the last 7 or 8 weeks. I never really did any blueprints so the design kept changing as I went along. We are trying to integrate three small groups of chickens in the one larger coop. So far, they want to stay in their own little cliques. We currently have 8 hens and one rooster in the new coop, We have two other black bantam roosters we are looking to find homes for if you know of anyone in the country who might be interested, they are are free to a good home, they were a result of our original flock hiding several eggs in the back of the old coop -- that was a surprise! Love your flower pictures!

I have not seen anything yet, but I was wondering if anyone has a group on canning and pickling stuff from your garden. I have a pretty big variety this year and I know how to pickle okra and cucumbers but I don't really know how to can the rest of what I am going to produce. I want to can not freeze since if your power goes out you lose everything so if you hear anything or info on the subject let me know...thanks
