"I'm so bummed that I can't come to this. I hope you'll plan another screening in a few more weeks or months, or perhaps the DVD could go out on loan?"

Chad Hellwinckel commented on William Wilson's blog post Chris Hedges: Zero Point of Systemic Collapse
"That was a good read. And I agree with the thought that effort must be put into creating 'self standing' systems, but I hope it doesn't play out like this: "those who survive will need isolated areas of land as well as distance…"

"William~ I noticed a new 'for rent' sign on a small house the next block over in Parkridge. The corner of Woodbine and Monroe (one block up woodbine from Winona). Don't know how much it is...maybe $550-$600?"

Interested in permaculture and the transition movement.
What neighborhood do you live in?
Oglewood Ave.
About me:
Who Am I?

I am a thinker, an activist, and a father.

I make my living as a bookkeeper for small businesses and nonprofits. I learned this skill on the job working for a small business. I kept it up because I believe that small locally owned businesses are the heart of a healthy economy.

I am an activist. I have worked against Mountain Top Removal coal mining in the Appalachians and unsustainable gas drilling practices in Tennessee. I worked with a coalition of environmental groups to convince the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) to write new rules to govern hydrofracking in Tennessee. My fieldwork during this time also brought new scrutiny to the lax environmental practices of gas drilling companies in Tennessee.

I have served as a campaign manager for a city council election campaign, and treasurer for a county campaign commission. I did Get Out the Vote and voter registration work during the 2004 presidential campaign. I worked for a short time as a community organizer for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

I have been arrested for civil disobedience protesting outside of a facility that refurbishes nuclear weapons. I tried but failed to get arrested for taking over a billboard to protest the invasion of Iraq.

I am currently working to form a Transition group in Knoxville. Transition (big T) is a movement that seeks to move towns and neighborhoods to less dependence on fossil fuels. The official motivations for the Transition movement are peak oil and climate change. I remain agnostic about peak oil (it's happening but I'm not convinced it will be the end of cheap energy), and even if climate change were not happening (I believe it is) there would still be reason to stop sucking poison out of the earth to put in our cars and fuel the industrialized nature destroyer we call modern civilization.

I am also a writer. In real life terms this generally means that I start new blogging projects every six months or so which may or may not go anywhere. I have made a little money at this in my life but I'm a long way from making a living at it and lately my bookkeeping work and activism have been my priorities.

Things I think I'm pretty good at:

Thinking strategically
facilitating small to medium meetings
presenting and public speaking
absorbing a lot of information in a short time (research and learning)
writing and communication (if I have some time to prepare)

Why I Believe in Transition

Something I wrote a while back:  Why I Believe in Transition.  I might state things a little differently today but the basic sentiment is the same.

Chris Hedges: Zero Point of Systemic Collapse

Quote: "All resistance must recognize that the body politic and global

capitalism are dead. We should stop wasting energy trying to reform or

appeal to it. This does not mean the end of resistance, but it does

mean very different forms of resistance. It means turning our energies

toward building sustainable communities to weather the coming crisis,

since we will be unable to survive and resist without a

cooperative effort."…

Paper for compost

Hi all-

My place of work produces a good volume of paper waste (regular office paper).

Is anyone interested in taking some paper to add some carbon to their compost?

Looking for a place to live

I'll be moving in the next few months. I'm looking to rent a place that is close to downtown, gardenable (or near a community garden), and inexpensive.

I'm thinking a good place to live would be in an area that already has a community of permaculturists established.

Any suggestions?

Sorry Will for taking so long to respond to your friend request- I really don't use this Ning site as much as I should.

More importantly, I'm very happy to be your friend in real life. :)
