Trash to Treasure--making shopping bags from fabric remnants

Be sure to visit my blog at www.marthasunsphere.blogspot.com and check out the shopping bags I have been sewing using fabric remnants I bought at Habitat for Humanity for less than 10 cents each. I plan to exchange for plants at the East Tennessee Plant Swap this Saturday----

Part of the joy of life is living well on less. This fabric would have wound up in a land fill and now it has been turned into something beautiful…

Hey Martha,
I am a new member of the Permaculture Guild. I am currently working with the Knox County Food and Policy Health Council on community gardens this semester at the Health Department. I am in the process of creating a Community Garden Toolkit in order to be put on the County's website for current and future community gardeners in the Knoxville area. While compiling this toolkit I could not help but notice some of your wonderful photos you have uploaded to the website and was wondering if I may have your permission to use a couple to include into the toolkit? Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Sheena Kanott

Hi Martha,
I actually built two of these. They are meant to be brooder runs. The one in the picture measures 3x5, the run is 18 inches high with hardware cloth on the bottom to keep out burrowing animals. The enclosure is about 1/3 the total area of the run and only has vinyl siding covering the chicken wire that encases the entire run. It has a hinged plywood top with asphalt paper on top and a roost running the length of the enclosure. I built them this summer to isolate some chicks from the main coop for about 18 weeks until they were old enough to join the others. One of our hens stashed away a clutch of eggs we didn't find until one had hatched this past June. We kept the mama and four chicks in the booder run until a few months ago when I got the new coop finished (see my page for the new green and cedar roofed coop) a few weeks after they moved into the brooder run, another member of the hen coalition offered us 4 more pullets, so I built a second brooder run. If you are in need of one of these, please let me know, I would be glad to give it to you. It would require at least a full size pickup to move, it won't fit in my pickup. Let me know if you have any other questions, Have a Happy New Year!
Aaron
