Pullets Available, Egg Laying Breeds

Hi Folks,If anyone is interested, we have 3 month old pullets available for sale. We have Black Jersey Giants (dual purpose brown egg layers) and Araucanas (easter egg chickens) for $8 each. These birds should be laying by late summer, although the larger Jerseys may take a few weeks more due to their maturity rate. All have been carefully kept on pasture, and have one wing clipped, so they must be kept in a predator free environment. Let us know!JenniferLightning Jar Farm865-335-1736See More

How many farmers and how big are farms?

Hi Folks,For some time I have been looking for an estimate of what the farm population needs to look like after peak oil. I have finally come across the following:Richard Heinberg's speech at the E.F. Schumacher Society in Stockbridge MA. To summarize, he estimates 40-50 million farmers, each farming between 3 to 50 acres. Has anyone come across other sociological estimates?Happy growing! Good question...and I don't have a ready answer. My basic assumption is that east Tennessee could not be close to feeding itself in the near future...and we'll have to depend on industrial ag in the midwest for grain production (until population's decline 100 years out). But I think in the vital area of fruits and vegetables (and possibly eggs and meat), we can make significant progress toward meeting local demand in the next 10-20 years. But if you come across any papers looking at this subject, pass them on...I'll do the same!

That story on the Dekalb county gardener being sued is an important lesson about keeping city laws friendly to urban agriculture. I like what his neighbor said in the last line of the article!
