Building Permanent Culture in Knoxville

Did you see the article in Saturday's paper? It was all about the KCDC gardens, and had some sweet quotes from elderly participants.

Thanks, I just read it. Sounds like gardening isn't simply a hobby for these folk, but fills vital economic component. Here's the link.

It's as if they were uprooted from the land and haven't been healthy since. I cannot imagine my father-in-law living away from a farm, unable to tend a garden or raise cattle. The imagery in the last quote will stay with me for a while–the gentleman saying that he'd drag himself down the rows to weed if he needed to, to stay in the garden and stay alive. Wow.

I assisted Jim Cunnigham when I worked at Beardsley Farm last year. We transplanted so many tomatoes and peppers, it was insane. I can't imagine aan 18% increase (workload) for him, but it's great!

I was most struck by this statement:
"Community garden advocates say shared gardening spaces can raise property values and lower crime rates, as well as help with food budgets."

Just goes to show that we need MORE community gardens to further promote revitilization and beautification in Knoxville.

Here is a link to Jim's program CAC's Green Thumb
