Event Description

This will be the first vote making hens legal!
If passed, there will be a second (and final) vote on June 29th.

The vote will be a close one, so please come to the meeting to show your support. A large crowd will definitely help sway any councilpersons still on the fence! Don't assume there will be a sufficient number...WE NEED YOU THERE! So mark your calendars!

We need to all CALL our city council members now!
Download MYTHS and FACTS before talking to your CITY COUNCIL members.

Meeting starts at 7pm, Tuesday, June 15th at the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building, 400 Main Street.

I cannot attend, but I did send the email below to all the city council members (though I live in the county!). Is our next step the county? Like John, I would like to tackle the county next for those of us in an RA zone.

To City Council Members

Hello,

I thank you all for your consideration of allowing city residents to keep backyard chickens for personal use. A "yes" vote would move the city forward in terms of local sustainability initiatives and the local food movement. I think the proposal as drafted takes into account any negative issues that may abe associated with potential problems.

I have attached the link below so you can see how many cities currently have some sort of ordinance that allows chickens.

I would appreciate a vote of support, a "yes" vote, that would allow us to move forward with this initiative. And remember, all the sweet chickens will thank you. You might even get some free eggs!

Kim

Can someone post specifics about what is being proposed - i.e., how many hens, minimum lot size, other control aspects? Or if someone can post the draft ordinance, that would be very helpful.

Why not provide the e mail address of all city council members in your message?

I hope to make this event but may miss out if my wife has the baby before then. Does anyone know how this will affect the county at all? I'm zoned RA which is low density residential and doesn't allow for "livestock". I currently have meat pigeons in clear violation of the law, but they don't make any noise. Most hens cackle loudly (I know some varieties are more quiet) when they lay and I couldn't have that in my neighborhood. I have 1 acre in West Knox and if they'd change the zoning regs I'd build the coop the next weekend. I was planning on getting a quiet breed anyway whether they change the zoning or not. 6 dogs are way more of an issue than 6 hens. I hope this happens and glad people(s) took the initiative to try to accomplish it.
