Event Description

The project to repeal or revise Knoxville's anti-poultry ordinance has made initial contacts in the city government. This meeting will review what has been done and what should be our next steps in the process. All are welcome to come with questions, comments, concerns, information and ideas. Other cities are making this happen - Knoxville can too!

The Dec. Jan. issue of "Backyard Poultry" has a great article entitled "How to Legalize Hens in Your Community."

The newest chicken house on our teaching farm is modeled on the traditional saltbox design facing south. This is a good all season design, and far superior to the shed design we originally used. Anyone wishing to view the design, the rain catching features (for watering and washing) and the split function features (roosting / laying and dusting) can contact us at 865-354-8170 or email us at leaf@sustainability-teaching-farm.com

I'll bring copies of some other city ordinances to the Sunday meeting. And since I work in the building industry and the proposed ordinance requires a BUILDING PERMIT for any chicken coop, I'll bring a copy of that set of requirements and fees. Lots to discuss. LOTS.

This is the new proposed ordinance written by Knoxville Animal Control Board just received yesterday. It is a draft that they will vote on January 20th to 'recommend' to the mayor and city council. Its very similar to other cities' codes such as Seattle, Portland, Fort Collins, etc. We can recommend changes still. Once they approve it, it will go to the sheriff for approval, then to the mayor and then to City Council for a vote.

Greetings,

May I ask who wrote the Urban Hens Draft Ordinance and when?
